The Hawaiian Islands attract great athletes and big competitions, whether it’s the annual Ironman Triathlon, the Maui marathon, or any number of world-class surfing competitions. One of the most exciting and unique competitions is happening this month, so make sure to put it on your calendar if you plan on being in Maui on September 19th. The Pailolo is one of the biggest and most prestigious canoeing races in the world. It features teams of men, women, and mixed-gender squads paddling the Pailolo Channel, which stretches 26 miles from D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Maui to Kaunakakai Pier on Moloka’i.
The races start on D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Maui, and spectators are welcomed. Show up at 8:30 AM to see the first teams launch. This race includes several different divisions, so you will see teams of varying sizes, all the way up to 12 people paddling in a single long, massive canoe.
The Pailolo Channel is a very windy corridor of water that will challenge even highly trained paddlers. The long distance taxes arms and shoulders and requires every team to work in exacting precision to stay ahead of the pack. Check out this map of the course.
As a spectator, you will get to participate in the traditional Hawaiian prayer before the first heat is sent off. From your perch, you’ll be able to watch these amazing athletes fight against the waves and slowly disappear into the distance as they make their way toward Moloka’i.
