Will you be visiting Maui over Halloween? Then save some room in your luggage. You’ll definitely want to pack your favorite costume! That’s because Hawaii loves Halloween, and Maui throws the biggest bash in the entire state. On October 31st, the town of Lahaina on the west coast of Maui closes down its famous Front Street and turns into one huge, fun, and exciting Halloween party. No wonder the locals like to call it the “Mardi Gras of the Pacific.”

Get There Early

Halloween in Lahaina has been known to attract upwards of 30,000 people, most of them in costumes ranging from a few fun accessories to elaborately hand-created numbers. Unsurprisingly, parking can be a challenge, so we suggest getting there early before sunset so you aren’t spending your night searching for an open spot. This will also give you a chance to do a little souvenir shopping around town while the shops are still open. It’s also best to go early if you have children. They can enjoy or participate in the children’s parade, which usually takes place right before sunset around 4 PM.

When the Sun Goes Down

When the sun goes down, the ghouls come out. The bars along Front Street throw their doors open, and the adult fun begins. You may want to take the kiddies home, as some of the costumes will be risqué. Though alcohol is not allowed in the streets, the bars will make sure to keep you well watered. Enjoy some witches’ brew at local establishments, along with live music and drink specials. Many of the bars host costume contests, so you’ll get to see a lot of creative getups. If your costume is any good, put yourself into the ring and see if you take home any prizes.

Halloween in Lahaina is a chance for the residents of the island to let their inner devils take over just a little bit. It’s a big, fun, and loud party that you are invited to. Just make sure to catch a cab to get you back home if you choose to drink responsibly. The local police force performs random DUI checks in the area. There are also shuttles to Lahaina from Kihei if you don’t want to stay in the chaos or have to drive through it.
