Goats on a surfboard. No, this isn’t some weird dream you’re having on the beach in Maui. It means you’ve found one of the island’s coolest, most unique, and certainly tastiest treasures – the Surfing Goat Dairy. Sorry, the goats don’t actually surf on a farm in Kula, but they do make some delicious cheese. If you want to do something very different on your Maui trip, then a visit to this quaint dairy is in order. Your taste buds will thank you!
Introducing the Surfing Goat Dairy
Surfing Goat Dairy is a 42-acre dairy farm located on the slopes of Haleakala Crater. It was founded by German ex-pats Thomas and Eva Kafsack. Today, their farm is home to over 100 does (female goats) that provide the farm with a never-ended supply of award-winning gourmet goat cheese.
We know what you’re thinking – “Please, please, please say that I can pet the goats.”
You bet you can!
Take an Ag-Tour at the Surfing Goat Dairy
Did we have you at “gourmet goat cheese?” Well, it gets better. The Surfing Goat Dairy also offers three really cool tours that make for a great family activity and are reasonably priced. If you just want to swing by the farm on your own schedule, then you can drop into a daily tour. This 20-minute tour will introduce you to the farm’s goats and show you how the farm operates. The “Evening Chores & Milking Tours” takes place at 3:15 pm Monday – Saturday and lets participants assist in hand-milking and feeding goats. Finally, your kids can learn some useful skills! The “Grand Dairy Tour” gives you an even more immersive experience, allowing participants to feed and milk the goats and observe the cheese-making process. Don’t worry, after all that work you’ll get to sample a variety of cheeses as your reward.
Don’t Go Home Empty-Handed
If you’re going to make the trip all the way out to the Surfing Goat Dairy, you definitely can’t go away empty handed, especially with so much amazing cheese on hand. Gourmet goat cheese truffles…need we say more?
Probably not, but we’ll finish up this article anyway. At the dairy’s store you can buy truffles to your heart’s delight, as well as a variety of goat cheeses, goat’s milk soap, and nifty gift baskets. We know that you’ll want to keep all those truffles and cheeses to yourself, but your friends and family are expecting souvenirs, so stock up on something they’ll actually enjoy. (No lame postcards or keychains from this vacation!)
We bet you and your family will have a great time exploring the Surfing Goat Dairy. Make sure to check the website for hours of operation and tour times before you go, and stay tuned for future profiles of Maui’s hidden gems.
