North Kihei is an often-overlooked region, located just south of Ma’alaea and north of Wailea. Not only do you escape the crowds, but you also get the convenience of being close to both Wailea and Lahaina.  Everything is a quick drive from this central spot.  It’s a great place to relax and enjoy some outdoor activities, with its golden beaches and blue waters lapping against the shoreline. Here are a few suggestions for things to do in North Kihei:

For a laid-back beach day, find your own empty spot along Sugar Beach.  You can walk for miles without having to stop.  Find your spot with shade, then sunbathe, boogieboard, frisbee, make a sand castle, or whatever you and your family are into.  Keep in mind some of the most prestigious canoe clubs run from over here, so you could potentially get a ride!

If you’re looking for something more active than sunbathing, why not try stand-up paddleboarding? The calm waters of North Kihei make it perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. If you don’t have your own board, there are plenty of rentals nearby that offer SUP lessons too.

For nature lovers, Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is an ideal spot for bird-watching or exploring the diverse wetlands ecosystem. In addition to being home to migratory birds from all over North America (and even some from Alaska!), visitors can walk along the bridges and paths and read highlights about the native flora and fauna species unique to Hawaii.
