Make Your Trip To South Maui A Golfing Destination
What could be better than relaxing on a warm beach in South Maui with the endless blue sky overhead, the waves crashing in the background, and the gentle winds cooling the sun’s heat?
Golfing, that’s what.
If you only feel alive with a 9-iron in hand, then you can’t let your trip to South Maui go to waste. This area is known for some of the most beautiful and exotic golf courses in the entire world. The beach can come later. First, start making plans to visit at least one of these beauties:
Maui Nui Golf Club former the Elleair Maui Golf Club
This challenging and immaculate course almost hugs the Kihei shoreline. Even if you don’t play your best, the amazing views will keep your spirits up. While you play this Par 71, you’ll get an eyeful of ocean views as well some looks of the mountains of West Maui and even Molokini, a partially submerged volcanic crater in the Alalakeiki Channel.
One of the challenges of this course is working with the prevailing winds. As you move through the holes, you’ll get to play downwind, upwind, and with teasing crosswinds. A varied topography also makes this a memorable and enjoyable course.
Wailea Gold Course
This award-winning and beautiful course has hosted some golfing legends, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. This rugged par 72 course incorporates lava rock walls and sweeping ocean vistas. Don’t let the gorgeous views distract you! You’ll need to keep your game face on and make every stroke count on this challenging, “thinking player’s course”.
Don’t let Gold scare you if you are a beginning golfer or have a high handicap. Each hole offers at least four tee boxes so that everyone can have a good time.
Wailea Emerald Course
Emerald Course is a relatively young course and serves as a companion to Gold. While Emerald has sometimes been described as “eye candy”, don’t be fooled by its picturesque landscaping and jaw-dropping ocean views. This is a serious par 72 course that will have you reaching into your bag for every available club.
Emerald has received multiple honors and awards, and you’ll understand why when you visit this beautiful course. Of particular note is the double green shared by holes 10 and 17. Beware the huge lake that has swallowed many an unfortunate ball!
Emerald is also recognized as one of the most female-friendly courses in the world. Ladies, this one is for you!
Wailea Old Blue Course
Old Blue isn’t really so old…she’s a classic! This course was the first ever built in Wailea, earning it the nickname “Grand Lady of Wailea”. The course has stood up well to time, offering lush greens and breath-taking views of the ocean, the islands of Lanai, and Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano.
Golfers can also enjoy some special Maui touches on the course, including tropical flowers lining some of the holes and teasing winds that make every golfer work for the par 72.
Any of these golf courses will give you an unforgettable golfing experience in South Maui, but why choose? Try them all!
