Isana Brave Fish Kitchen
“Bold and adventurous” is how John Arabatzis Jr describes Isana, a restaurant he started with a few fishing buddies. Supplied by friends with fish fresh off the boat, you’re likely to find seafood here you won’t find at any other sushi restaurant on Maui. Our favorite from the menu: The Volcano Roll. Baked California roll, topped with sliced salmon, creamy spicy sauce, sliced jalapeño, habanero masago, and unagi sauce.

Nuka
Known for beautiful and creative specialty rolls, Nuka and executive Sushi Chef Hiro Takanashi have been wowing diners with fantastic hand-rolled sushi and Japanese fare since 2013. The location had been an auto parts store, but you’d never guess by looking at it today. The modern décor strikes an elegant and cosmopolitan balance to the rural scene outside in Haiku. Nuka does not take reservations, so your best bet to grab a seat at the sushi bar is to arrive before 6 pm. Our favorite from the menu: The Nuka Roll. Spicy tuna, cucumber, avo, shiso, snapper, jalapeño, and house-made Nuka sauce.

1054 Togoshi
The low-key vibe of 1054 Togoshi is the counterbalance to other sushi bar options on Maui. The Tokyo-born owner/chef Manabu Sugiyama and his wife Satoe are focused on making 1054 Togoshi your “Happy Aloha Place”. Our favorite from the menu: Spicy Scallop Roll. Scallop, tobiko, and spicy mayo.

Sansei Seafood Restaurant
Named by Bon Appetite as “One of America’s Best Sushi Bars”, Sansei has been delighting sushi lovers on Maui since 1996. Contemporary sushi and new wave Asian dishes are their signatures. Morimoto Maui

This talented pioneer became the executive chef at the original Nobu after it opened in 1994. The stylish setting for this restaurant is a great place to enjoy cocktails, catch a majestic Maui sunset, and experience spectacular sushi from a legendary Iron Chef. Our favorite from the menu: Shikai Maki Roll (also known as Morimoto Stained Glass Window Sushi Roll). Tamago, tuna, cucumber, rice, and nori. It’s a work of art.

The huge selection of sushi at this intimate, no-frills restaurant has something for everyone. Currently serving dinner-only, here you’ll find classic rolls as well as an abundance of specialty rolls and creative items you won’t find anywhere else. Chef/Owner Akira Watanabe has been the one-and-only sushi chef for this local favorite since 1994. Our favorite from the menu: The Caterpillar Roll. California roll with eel topped with avocado and homemade sauce.
